In recent years, the Indian education system has witnessed a growing focus on Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) as an integral part of student development. SEL emphasizes the cultivation of important life skills such as self-awareness, self-management, social awareness, relationship building, and responsible decision-making.
Now, you all must be wondering why we are talking about SEL? What is it's importance? Well, It enables the students to develop self-awareness, and interpersonal skills and forge meaningful relationships in schools and later at workplaces. Hence, it is imperative that it is taught formally through the curriculum designed by the National Curriculum Framework in schools.
In most schools, SEL is not even a part of the curriculum and as a result it is left to individual families to teach SEL to their children. Technology is also causing disruption in relationships; people are virtually connected but isolated. But, We have to explicitly add these skills to the formal curriculum and make students learn them experientially instead of encouraging rote learning. It is important to train teachers to impart some of these skills.
Adding a part of Social and Emotional Learning skills will not only create a safe space for student’s expression but also help them to tackle difficult situations in school as well as in their life.
In addition to the facts stated above, SEL has a profound impact on positive relationships between peers and teachers. Through increased empathy, communication skills, reduced conflicts, and improved collaboration, SEL provides the necessary framework for individuals to form strong, supportive relationships in schools. What do you guys think about the same?
