Victor Hugo once said, “Even the darkest night will end and the sun will rise again.”

In the realm of mental health, these words resonate profoundly. The journey from darkness to light mirrors the resilience of the human spirit. It's a reminder that even in our darkest moments, there is hope for a brighter future. Raising awareness about mental health becomes a beacon, guiding individuals through their own night towards the sunrise of healing and recovery.

Mental health awareness is particularly important because it is actually widespread. According to the National Institute of Mental Health, mental health illness affects 46% of teenagers, 19% of the adult population and 13% of children each year globally. It is, in fact, so widespread that people struggling with their mental health may be in your close family, live next door, or even be your coworker.

However, only half of those affected by mental health receive treatment, mostly because of the stigma attached to mental health. Untreated, mental illness can contribute to higher medical expenses, poorer performance at school and work, fewer employment opportunities and increased risk of suicide. The World Helath Organisation estimates  that more than 700, 000 people die by suicide every year, which is one person every 40 seconds.

Many individuals with mental illness avoid seeking professional help because they may not recognize symptoms as signs of mental health issues. For instance, someone with depression might mistake observable symptoms like low motivation and excessive sleep for laziness. Knowledge of diverse symptoms enables early detection, fostering self-awareness and aiding in identifying those who may need support. Increased awareness not only enhances personal understanding but also promotes empathy within the broader community, encouraging a supportive environment for individuals grappling with mental disorders.

In conclusion, understanding the symptoms of mental illness is a crucial step towards seeking timely help and providing support.
